NAFDAC confirms BON Bread manufacturer compliant with regulatory standards

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has concluded investigations into BON Bread and confirmed that its manufacturer, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, complies with regulatory standards.

The agency said laboratory analysis of bread samples collected from the company’s Abuja facility and the open market showed the presence of calcium propionate, an approved preservative used within internationally accepted limits. It added that no objectionable substances, including bromate or non-nutritive sweeteners, were detected.

NAFDAC launched the investigation following a social media claim on 13 April 2026 alleging that a loaf of BON Bread remained mould-free for more than two months. Inspectors visited the company’s bakery and reviewed production processes before conducting independent laboratory tests.

The agency noted that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited has maintained regulatory compliance since 2006, with no record of penalties or product recalls.

Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the findings reaffirm the company’s adherence to food safety standards and encouraged members of the public to report concerns about regulated products for prompt investigation.

NAFDAC stated that it will continue routine surveillance of bakery products nationwide to ensure consumer safety and maintain public confidence in regulated food items.

What this means:
NAFDAC’s investigation shows that BON Bread is safe to eat and meets approved food safety standards. The preservative found in it, calcium propionate, is commonly used in bread to prevent mould and extend shelf life, and it was used within allowed limits. No harmful or banned substances were detected in the bread samples
