Suspected Ansaru terrorists attack military base in Kwara, kill three soldiers

Suspected members of Ansaru, a splinter faction of the Boko Haram terrorist organisation, attacked a military base in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

Premium Times reported that the terrorists came in the early hours of Thursday, killing at least three soldiers and injuring four others, including a local vigilante,

The attack occurred at approximately 3 a.m. in Kemanji village, which borders a section of the Kainji National Park that intelligence sources say Ansaru operatives use as a base of operations.

The attackers made directly for the military camp before opening fire on soldiers, according to a forest guard who works alongside military personnel and spoke to Premium Times on condition of anonymity for security reasons.

“The terrorists came directly to the military camp and opened fire on soldiers,” the forest guard said. “They killed three soldiers and injured four (three soldiers and a local vigilante).”

During the assault, the terrorists reportedly seized eight operational motorcycles and a gun truck before retreating from the area. A vigilante member in the village told Premium Times that soldiers killed a number of the attackers during the exchange of fire, though the figure could not be independently confirmed.

Although multiple terrorist groups are known to operate in the Kaiama area, sources cited by Premium Times attributed the attack specifically to Ansaru fighters, noting that the faction had previously engaged security forces in the village in armed confrontations.

As of the time of publication, neither the Nigerian military nor the Kwara State Police Command had issued an official statement on the incident.
