Nigeria’s underground scene is having a moment.
While Afrobeats dominates the global mainstream, a new generation is quietly building something weirder, faster, and more personal by blending trap, punk, amapiano, and alté sensibilities into sounds that don’t sit neatly in any one box. Here are three names worth your time:
Luwa.Mp4
Born Ayooluwa Akindeji and raised in Ibadan, Luwa.Mp4 has built a reputation as a genre-hopping shapeshifter, moving across pop, soft rock, and Afropop while keeping a distinctly punk, DIY spirit at the core of everything he makes.
His outlandish fashion sense earned him the nickname “alté Balotelli,” and on tracks like “pEEP MY RIDE” he’s turned the anxiety of standing out in Nigeria into some of his most compelling songwriting yet, presenting himself from the start as a musical shapeshifter built around a punk, do-it-yourself ethic. In December, 2025, his single CYK Baddie made waves on social media and became a niche hit.
NO11
NO11 is the Abuja-raised, Imo State-rooted singer who spent 2026 turning into one of the underground’s biggest breakout stories. His viral hit “How Far,” a groovy Afropop-meets-amapiano cut featuring Ajay Bobo and Monochrome, racked up nearly 20 million streams and hundreds of thousands of TikTok videos within months, eventually pulling in a remix with South African star Focalistic. He is now featured on Davido’s latest album, Oriade.
Zaylevelten
Real name Chisom Okoro, Zaylevelten (also known by his producer alias Tenski) is an Ikorodu-born, Lagos-based rapper-producer widely seen as the face of a new generation reshaping Nigerian hip-hop. His sound splices rage-rap distortion and gqom basslines with the shuffle of Naira Marley-style street pop, switching fluidly between English, Pidgin, Yoruba, and Igbo. This is a fusion he’s described as the meeting point of hip-hop and core Nigerian music, engineered to create what he calls “burti,” or vibe.
He broke out in 2025 with the viral single “Maye,” followed by “Pawon” and “Fly,” before dropping the 12-track mixtape “then 1t g0t crazy,” a project that pulled co-signs from Davido, Zlatan, and Odumodublvck and pushed multiple songs past a million Spotify streams each. He produces and engineers much of his own work, and his rapid-fire flow switches have made him one of the more unpredictable, distinctive voices to emerge from Lagos in years.
