Makinde-backed PDP appoints Turaki as interim national chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party faction backed by Seyi Makinde has appointed Kabiru Turaki as chairman of a 13-member interim national working committee.

Turaki was named to lead the committee on Monday during the party’s 103rd national executive committee meeting held in Abuja.

The interim committee includes Woyengikuro Daniel, Hamza Koshe, Ihediwa Nnabugwu, Isa Abubakar, Okechukwu Daniel, Theophilus Shan, Ini Ememobong, Aribisala Idowu, Bara’u Shafi’i, Ogbu Chinenyenwa, Umar Aji, and Arapaja Taofeek as secretary.

The appointment followed a motion moved by Aziegbemi Anthony, chairman of the party in Edo State.

The development comes amid a leadership crisis within the PDP after the Supreme Court invalidated the party’s national convention held in November 2025.

The convention elected Turaki as the party’s national chairman.

In the ruling delivered on 30 April, the apex court dismissed an appeal filed by the Turaki-led faction, holding that the convention violated an existing order of the Federal High Court which had restrained the party from proceeding with the exercise.

The court found that the appellants acted in disregard of the subsisting order and upheld earlier judgments of the lower courts that nullified the convention.

The crisis had earlier prompted the party’s board of trustees, led by Adolphus Wabara, to assume leadership following the judgment.

WHAT THIS MEANS
The appointment of an interim leadership signals an attempt by the PDP faction to stabilise the party amid ongoing legal and internal disputes. However, the Supreme Court ruling and competing claims to authority may prolong the leadership crisis, potentially affecting party cohesion and its readiness for future political contests.
