South Korean midfielder joins Atletico on a five-year deal while 22-year-old Uzbekistan defender commits future to City after FA Cup and League Cup success.

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of South Korea international Kang-In Lee from European champions Paris Saint-Germain on a deal until June 30, 2031, as Manchester City locked down the future of young defender Abdukodir Khusanov with a five-year contract extension on the same day.

Both announcements were made on Saturday, marking a busy day of transfer activity for two of Europe’s leading clubs.

Lee joins Atletico for around €40 million

Atletico Madrid confirmed the deal in an official statement, describing the 25-year-old as a key addition to their attacking options.

“Atletico de Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement for the transfer of Kang-In Lee, who has signed for our club until June 30, 2031,” the Spanish club said.

“A talented left-footed midfielder, the 25-year-old can operate in the attacking midfield role or from either wing, and stands out for his vision, exquisite ball control and ability to pass and shoot.”

The clubs did not reveal the transfer fee, but a source close to the negotiations told AFP it was around 40 million euros ($45.5 million), excluding bonuses.

Lee arrived at PSG from Valencia in 2023 and scored 16 goals in 124 appearances for the French club, collecting 12 trophies during his time in Paris. However, he had limited playing time under manager Luis Enrique and suffered a thigh injury in January, while remaining an unused substitute as PSG won the last two Champions League finals. PSG “warmly” thanked the player on his departure.

Lee made the last of his 50 international appearances during the 2026 World Cup, as South Korea were eliminated in the group stage.

He is Atletico’s third summer signing, following Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand and Spanish full-back Alejandro Grimaldo. The arrivals come as club stalwart Antoine Griezmann has departed for Orlando City in Major League Soccer.

PSG have also sold fellow attacker Goncalo Ramos to AC Milan and, according to AFP sources, are holding talks with Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche and RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande as they reshape their squad following their Champions League successes.

Khusanov commits future to City on a five-year deal

At the Etihad, Manchester City confirmed that Abdukodir Khusanov has signed a five-year contract extension, securing the 22-year-old centre-back’s future at the club until at least 2031.

The Uzbekistan international joined City from French side Lens in January 2025 and played a key role last season as the club won the FA Cup and League Cup, while finishing second in the Premier League. He has earned 30 international caps for Uzbekistan and featured at the 2026 World Cup, playing in all three of his country’s Group K matches.

Khusanov said the extension represents the start of a new challenge for him at the club.

“This is a great day for me and my family. I am really happy to extend my stay at City,” he said.

“I’ve enjoyed every minute since I arrived in Manchester and I feel I am growing and learning a lot as a player. I have a new challenge now, which is to impress (new manager) Enzo Maresca and his staff and ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that.”

City’s director of football Hugo Viana said the club sees significant room for further growth in the young defender.

“We’ve been really pleased and impressed by Abdukodir’s development since he arrived in England. We’re seeing him grow into a brilliant young man and an outstanding defender — but we know this is only the beginning. His physical and technical abilities are top, he has all the assets needed to be a world-class centre-back. At just 22, his best years are all in front of him and his potential to get even better is clear for all to see.”

Khusanov is the second City player to commit his long-term future to the club this week, following England forward Phil Foden, who signed a new four-year deal earlier in the week.
