INEC confirms submission of membership registers by all 22 political parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission says all 22 registered political parties in Nigeria have submitted their membership registers in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.

In a statement issued on Friday, Mohammed Haruna, chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, said the submissions were completed two days before the extended deadline of May 10, 2026.

According to INEC, the extension followed concerns raised by political parties during a meeting held on March 24, 2026, over timelines contained in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 general elections.

The commission explained that the adjustment was made to align with Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026 and the schedule fixed by parties for their primaries.

Political parties were permitted to conduct their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, while their membership registers were required to be submitted at least 21 days before the conduct of their respective primaries.

INEC said all parties met the requirement within the approved timeframe.

The commission added that the submitted registers will now undergo verification in line with legal provisions.

INEC also reaffirmed its commitment to credible elections, stating that it remains focused on delivering free, fair, and inclusive polls.
