Tinubu appoints retired major general as special adviser on homeland security

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Adeyinka Famadewa, a retired major general, as his special adviser on homeland security.

Chris Ugwuegbulam, head of information and public relations at the office of the secretary to the government of the federation, announced the appointment in a statement on Monday.

Ugwuegbulam said the appointment recognises Famadewa’s “exceptional record of service, strategic expertise, and outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s national security architecture”.

The appointment reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to improving internal security coordination, strengthening intelligence-led operations and enhancing collaboration among security agencies to address emerging threats across the country, according to a circular signed by Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, permanent secretary at the general services office.

Famadewa is a retired general with over three decades of military and intelligence service spanning national security strategy, intelligence fusion, counter-terrorism operations and international security diplomacy.

He served as principal general staff officer to the national security adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser from 2015 to 2021, where he played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s modern intelligence coordination framework.

During his tenure, Famadewa spearheaded the establishment of the Intelligence Fusion Centre at the Office of the National Security Adviser, creating an integrated multi-agency intelligence platform that brought together the Defence Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and the Armed Forces to improve national threat assessment and strategic response coordination.

After retiring from active military service, Famadewa served as a senior research fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, where he continued contributing to national security discourse through research and policy engagement.

His scholarly works include the monograph titled “Policing and National Security in Nigeria”, which provides practical frameworks for strengthening civil-security collaboration.

Ugwuegbulam said Tinubu expressed confidence that Famadewa’s appointment will enhance the administration’s efforts towards achieving a safer and more secure Nigeria through improved coordination of homeland security initiatives, intelligence integration and proactive risk management.

The president urged Famadewa to deploy his wealth of experience, professionalism and strategic insight in advancing national security objectives and supporting the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda
