The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has elected Bala Mohammed as its new national chairman.
His emergence follows the resignation of Ajuji Ahmed, who had served as the party’s acting national chairman since March 2024.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, disclosed that Ahmed has recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Johnson described Mohammed, a former national organising secretary of the party, as an experienced administrator from Kaduna.
He noted that Mohammed brings extensive experience, strategic insight, and strong commitment to the party’s grassroots-driven ideology.
The party also expressed concern over what it termed an “assault on democracy” as the 2027 elections approach.
NNPP further warned that Nigeria is at a “critical juncture,” pointing to economic challenges, rising inflation, and worsening insecurity.
“We are witnessing a coordinated assault on the foundations of our democracy,” the statement reads.
The party identified “sponsored internal crises, spurious legal challenges, and democratic erosion” as major threats.
It said Mohammed’s emergence is a strategic move in response to the prevailing political climate.
The NNPP added that the new chairman is expected to strengthen internal structures and position the party ahead of the next general elections.
“Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a sanctuary for the hopes of the common man,” the party said.
The party expressed confidence in its new leadership, stating it is well positioned to “offer Nigerians the governance they truly deserve” as preparations for the general elections gather momentum.
