The Association of Resident Doctors, Federal Capital Territory (ARD-FCT) has declared a seven-day warning strike due to the city’s health system collapse.
The doctors declared the strike in a statement signed by ARD-FCT president George Ebong and other members of the executive.
They said that the health sector in the nation’s capital is plagued by long-standing structural flaws that necessitate extensive and urgent improvements.
Ebong stated that doctors in the FCT are under enormous pressure due to insufficient staffing, and that they are frequently required to cover various departments.
Last month, the doctors’ organisation urged the government to address growing issues in the city’s healthcare system.
Ebong asked for immediate action in areas such as manpower shortages, malfunctioning equipment, bad working conditions, and unpaid staff allowances.
He stated that doctors in the FCT were under tremendous pressure, frequently covering numerous departments, and warned that continuing negligence could lead to systemic collapse.
Resident doctors are medical school graduates who train as specialists. They dominate Nigerian hospital emergency wards and are critical to providing high-quality treatment across the country.
