The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied reports that it has joined calls for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to resign, describing the claims as “outright falsehood” and reaffirming its support for his continued leadership of world football’s governing body.

The denial was published on Saturday in a statement posted on the NFF’s official X account.

NFF rejects the claims in its own words

The federation was unequivocal in its rejection of the social media reports that had placed it among the associations calling for Infantino’s removal.

“Contrary to reports, especially on social media, @thenff has never asked and is not asking for @FIFAcom President, Mr. Gianni Infantino to step down as FIFA PRESIDENT,” the statement reads.

“This is outright falsehood. Kindly disregard.”

What triggered the rumours: the FIFA Forward Enterprise controversy

The denial comes amid growing pressure on Infantino from several football confederations following his controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which sought to invite external investment in FIFA competitions in exchange for increased financial injection into the game.

The proposal was later withdrawn, but the damage to Infantino’s standing among some member associations has continued. Football associations in Wales, England, and most recently Norway have publicly called for the Italian to vacate his position. Argentina and Mexico, by contrast, have publicly supported Infantino’s continued leadership, placing the debate along a fault line that broadly mirrors broader geopolitical divides within FIFA’s membership.

Social media reports had claimed the NFF had aligned itself with the European nations in calling for Infantino’s removal, a claim the federation has now categorically denied.

NFF has a documented record of supporting Infantino

The NFF’s denial is consistent with its publicly stated position on Infantino’s leadership. In February, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau hailed the FIFA chief’s “decade of transformative leadership.” The federation has also submitted its letter of nomination and support for Infantino’s re-election bid in 2027, making its position on his continued presidency a matter of official record rather than informal alignment.
