Spain has extended Luis de la Fuente’s contract through 2032 after his Nations League, Euro 2024 and 2026 World Cup successes.
Spain’s World Cup-winning coach Luis de la Fuente will remain in charge of the national team until 2032 after the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) approved a six-year contract extension.
The federation’s board approved the renewal unanimously on Monday, September 21, extending De la Fuente’s tenure beyond the 2028 European Championship and keeping him in charge for the 2030 World Cup and Euro 2032.
The decision comes two months after De la Fuente led Spain to its second World Cup title, beating Argentina in the final in New Jersey on July 19.
De La Fuente’s Trophy-Laden Spell
De la Fuente took over as Spain’s senior coach in December 2022 following Luis Enrique’s departure after the World Cup in Qatar.
Since then, he has guided Spain to three major international trophies: the 2023 UEFA Nations League, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup. Spain also finished runners-up in the 2025 Nations League after losing the final to Portugal on penalties.
His latest success has strengthened his position as Spain prepares to defend its World Cup title on home soil during the 2030 tournament.
The RFEF said the extension was part of a long-term project built around “stability and confidence” in De la Fuente and the sporting project he leads.
RFEF president Rafael Louzán also described De la Fuente as the most decorated coach in the history of the Spanish national team, pointing to his record of trophies and his long association with the federation.
A Longer Road Ahead
The new agreement means De la Fuente is set to oversee Spain at three more major international tournaments.
They include Euro 2028, the 2030 World Cup and Euro 2032. The 2030 World Cup will be hosted across Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina, with Spain among the principal host nations.
The extension also provides continuity as Spain begins a new cycle after its World Cup triumph.
De la Fuente recently announced his first squad since winning the tournament and said Spain would have to adapt to its new status as world champions.
“I’m not going to announce anything regarding my renewal,” De la Fuente said last week when asked about his future, adding that both sides were happy to continue before the federation formally announced the agreement.
Spain Begins Post-World Cup Campaign
The coach will not have to wait long to begin the next phase of his tenure.
Spain’s first competitive assignments after the World Cup come in the Nations League, with England, Croatia and the Czech Republic among their opponents in September and October.
The federation said the immediate objective is to compete in the next Nations League cycle while also beginning preparations for Euro 2028.
The long-term target will be particularly significant in 2030, when Spain will be one of the countries hosting the World Cup and will enter the tournament as defending champions.
De La Fuente’s Record
At 65, De la Fuente has already established a significant period of success with Spain since replacing Luis Enrique.
Reuters reported that he has overseen 50 matches, recording 38 wins, 10 draws and two defeats. Spain is also on a 38-match unbeaten run according to the agency’s tally.
The RFEF has described the current period as a historic one for Spanish football, with the national team having won the Nations League, European Championship and World Cup under De la Fuente.
The new contract now gives the coach a clear path to potentially spend a decade in charge of the senior national team, taking Spain through two European Championships and the 2030 World Cup.
For Spain, the extension represents a decision to continue with the coach who has delivered the team’s most recent international successes, while giving De la Fuente the opportunity to build on that record across the next six years.
