The Federal Government is set to unveil a $1 billion Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as part of President Bola Tinubu‘s Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA).
The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, headed by Minister Bernard M. Doro, is coordinating the programme, which First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu is expected to formally unveil.
The statement said the event “is expected to signal a major shift towards a more integrated, household-centred and results-driven approach to social protection in Nigeria,” and will “formally introduce a new generation of social protection interventions and delivery systems under the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
What the new Renewed Hope Social Protection Programme introduces
Central to the unveiling is the One Humanitarian One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS), an integrated national architecture connecting humanitarian response, social protection, poverty reduction and economic inclusion around the household as the unit of intervention and measurement. Its stated proposition is “One System, From Vulnerability to Prosperity.”
The ministry will use the event to outline its strategic priorities, institutional reforms and delivery mechanisms for humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction going forward.
As part of the rollout, the government will launch an Emergency Cash Transfer initiative targeting 7.6 million vulnerable households, aimed at providing timely support to families facing socioeconomic shocks and vulnerabilities.
The programme will also see the launch of Humanity First Magazine, a communications and knowledge platform intended to showcase interventions, results, partnerships and human-impact stories across Nigeria’s humanitarian and poverty-reduction space.
Part of a wider anti-poverty push
The announcement follows a $3.05 billion package of World Bank-supported programmes Tinubu unveiled in July, comprising the $1.25 billion NG-CARES additional financing for smallholder farmers and small businesses, the $300 million SOLID programme for displaced persons and host communities, and the $1.5 billion HOPE programme covering primary healthcare, education and local governance.
The new $1 billion Social Protection Programme adds to that broader push under the government’s Renewed Hope Development Plan 2026-2030, which officials have described as the roadmap for translating macroeconomic reforms into direct improvements in citizens’ livelihoods.
The government said Wednesday’s event is also expected to reinforce collaboration between the Office of the First Lady and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, with the stated goal of ensuring vulnerable households are protected, empowered and progressively linked to pathways out of poverty.
