Opposition party completes statutory candidate submission; Atiku’s primary landslide and Amaechi selection reflect party determination for 2027 contest
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has completed a critical statutory requirement for the 2027 general election by uploading the names and particulars of its presidential and vice-presidential candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission nomination portal.
The submission, announced on Tuesday night by ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, confirms that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi will lead the party’s presidential ticket.
“We are pleased to announce that we have successfully uploaded the names and particulars of the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar (GCON), and our vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi (CON), to the nomination portal of INEC,” Abdullahi stated in his announcement.
The submission represents a formal milestone in the ADC’s preparations for the 2027 election and demonstrates the party’s determination to present a consolidated opposition ticket despite earlier legal challenges attempting to remove the ADC from electoral participation.
Primary victory establishes Atiku’s mandate
Atiku’s path to the nomination began with a decisive primary victory on 27 May 2026. The former vice president secured the ADC’s presidential ticket in an overwhelming display of party support, polling 1,846,370 votes. His victory margin was substantial against two other credible contenders.
Rotimi Amaechi, the former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, received 504,117 votes, placing him second in the primary contest. Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, former Managing Director of the defunct FSB International Bank, placed third with 177,120 votes.
Following his primary victory, Atiku called for unity within the party. “Close ranks and join me in the fight to rescue Nigeria’s democracy,” he urged the defeated contenders, emphasizing that there was “no winner and no vanquished in the contest.”
Amaechi selection completes presidential ticket

The ADC announced Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate on 16 June 2026, following what the party described as “extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives of all geopolitical zones.”
Abdullahi described Amaechi as one of Nigeria’s “most experienced and respected political leaders” who enjoys “widespread support from party members across the federation.” The selection unified the party’s top two primary contenders under a single ticket, consolidating opposition forces ahead of the 2027 election.
Statutory compliance amidst legal uncertainties
The ADC’s completion of candidate submission occurs within a context of legal uncertainties affecting opposition parties. The party has faced court challenges regarding its registration status, with the Federal High Court in Lokoja setting aside an earlier judgment that directed INEC to register the party. Despite these legal complications, the ADC proceeded with candidate nominations and now has formally submitted its ticket to INEC.
INEC issued official access codes to political parties on 26 June 2026, allowing designated national officers to upload candidate particulars through the automated nomination portal. The portal is designed to close automatically upon the expiration of the prescribed submission period, establishing clear deadlines for all parties.
Opposition consolidation for 2027 contest
The ADC has positioned itself as a major opposition platform for the 2027 election, with both Atiku and Amaechi bringing substantial political experience and national profiles. Atiku is a multiple-time presidential candidate who previously contested under the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019 and 2023. Amaechi, having served as Rivers State governor and Minister of Transportation, brings executive and ministerial experience.
The party has consistently maintained that its objective is to provide Nigerians with “a credible alternative built on competence, unity, and national renewal.” With the formal submission of its presidential ticket to INEC, the ADC has cleared a critical procedural requirement and enters the formal campaign phase of the 2027 electoral cycle.
