After three weeks of group-stage matches, the FIFA World Cup enters its win-or-go-home knockout stage.

The FIFA World Cup enters a new chapter tonight as the knockout phase gets underway, with the race for football’s biggest prize narrowing to 32 teams after an entertaining and unpredictable group stage.
Across three weeks of football in the United States, Canada and Mexico, traditional powerhouses survived stern tests, debutants made history and Africa delivered one of its strongest-ever collective performances at a FIFA World Cup.
As highlighted in our Matchday 3 roundup, nine African nations secured qualification for the knockout rounds, an unprecedented achievement that underlined the continent’s growing influence on the global stage. South Africa, Morocco, Ivory Coast, DR Congo, Senegal, Algeria, Egypt, Cape Verde and Ghana all progressed, while Tunisia became the only African side to exit at the group stage.
With the group phase now complete, the margin for error disappears. Every match is a straight knockout, with winners advancing to the Round of 16 and defeated teams heading home.
