Morocco held Brazil to a draw as Ivory Coast struck late against Ecuador, signalling a strong early African presence at the World Cup.

The opening weekend of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered an early reminder of Africa’s growing presence on the global stage, as Morocco held Brazil to a 1–1 draw while Ivory Coast secured a late 1–0 win over Ecuador in Philadelphia.
At the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Morocco produced one of the standout performances of the round to frustrate five-time champions Brazil. The Atlas Lions took the lead in the 21st minute when Ismael Saibari finished a flowing move involving Brahim Díaz, lifting a composed effort over Alisson Becker.

Brazil responded just over ten minutes later through Vinicius Junior, who struck a powerful equaliser to level the contest. But despite spells of pressure, the South Americans found it difficult to break down a well-organised Moroccan side that maintained its shape and discipline throughout.
The result adds further weight to Morocco’s growing reputation on the world stage following their historic run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals, with Walid Regragui’s side again showing resilience against elite opposition.
In Philadelphia, Ivory Coast earned a hard-fought victory over Ecuador courtesy of a late goal that settled a tight encounter. Both sides created chances in an open contest, with Ecuador twice going close in the first half, while Ivory Coast also came within inches of breaking the deadlock after the interval.

With the game heading towards a draw, substitute Amad Diallo made the difference in the 89th minute, finishing from close range after a cut-back from Wilfried Singo to secure all three points for the Elephants.
The win marks an important step for Ivory Coast, who are aiming to build momentum in the group stage and strengthen their push for a place in the knockout rounds.
The two results underline a positive start for African teams in the competition.
