Democracy Day: FG declares June 12 public holiday

The Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in observance of Democracy Day.

The declaration was announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior.

Democracy Day is observed annually on June 12 to commemorate Nigeria’s democratic journey and honour the struggles and sacrifices associated with the country’s return to civilian rule. The date was officially adopted as Democracy Day in 2018, replacing May 29.

In the statement, the government described June 12 as a significant moment in Nigeria’s history, recognising the contributions of citizens whose efforts helped shape democratic governance in the country.

The minister said the Federal Government remained committed to democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

The Ministry of Interior also stated that it would continue to work with security agencies to maintain internal security and protect lives and property across the country.

According to the statement, the government considers a secure and stable environment essential for democratic governance and national development.

Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to use the holiday as an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s democratic progress and their responsibilities as citizens.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” the minister said.

The government urged citizens to observe the day peacefully and recommit themselves to lawful conduct, responsible civic engagement and national unity.
