Governors’ Forum Mourns Death of Former President Muhammadu Buhari

Describes him as a man of character, courage, and humility

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

In an official statement signed by the NGF Chairman and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Forum described Buhari’s passing as a major loss to Nigeria and the African continent, calling him one of the continent’s all-time great leaders.

“President Buhari was more than a former leader. He was a man of profound moral courage, unwavering character, and an exceptional sense of duty,” the statement read. “He will be remembered for his humility, strategic patience, and modest lifestyle.”

The Forum extended its heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, describing the loss as personal and painful, given the close political relationship between the two leaders. “We send our deepest condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on the painful loss of his dear friend, compatriot, immediate predecessor, and fellow party man,” it said.

The statement also conveyed sympathy to former First Lady, Aisha Buhari, and the rest of the family, acknowledging the depth of grief they must be experiencing.

The NGF further commiserated with the government and people of Katsina State, the home state of the late former President, and offered words of comfort to Governor Dikko Umar Radda.

The Forum prayed for Buhari’s eternal rest, asking Allah to forgive his shortcomings, make his grave spacious and filled with light, and admit him to al-jannah Firdaus. The statement concluded with a prayer for strength and patience for the bereaved family and the Nigerian people.

The passing of Buhari, who served as both a military Head of State and civilian President, marks the end of a long chapter in Nigeria’s political history.
