Tinubu appoints NECO, NBTE chairmen, names poly rector, extends library DG tenure

President Bola Tinubu has approved fresh appointments across key education agencies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the president’s special adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the appointments are part of efforts to strengthen institutions under the Federal Ministry of Education.

The President appointed Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu as Chairman of the National Examinations Council’s Governing Board, while Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi retained his position as Registrar.

He also appointed Prof. Babatunde Salako as Chairman of the National Board for Technical Education, after previously reappointing Executive Secretary Prof. Idris Bugaje for a second and final five-year term.

In the polytechnic sector, Tinubu named Dr Bongfa Binfa as Rector of the Federal Polytechnic in N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State, for a five-year term. Binfa follows the first rector, Dr Mukaila Zakari Ya’u, whose tenure expired in March 2026.

Binfa was previously the Deputy Rector (Academic) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas in Bonny and had lectured at the Federal Polytechnic in Idah before being appointed.

The President also extended Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi’s tenure as Director-General of Nigeria’s National Library for a last five-year term.

Anunobi, who was appointed in September 2021, has overseen “several institutional reforms aimed at repositioning the National Library as a modern technology-driven knowledge institution,” including the creation of digital platforms such as the National Repository of Nigeria and the National Virtual Library.

According to the announcement, Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State and previous Chairman of the NBTE, has considerable experience in educational administration, while Salako is a former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research.

It further stated that Anunobi’s tenure renewal will ensure continuity in ongoing reforms and the completion of the National Library headquarters in Abuja.
