U.S. Implements Stricter Visa Policy for Nigerian Travelers

New Single-Entry, Three-Month Validity Rule Takes Effect Under Reciprocity Policy

The United States has introduced a new visa policy for Nigerian travelers, effective July 8, 2025, that will see most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas limited to single-entry with a three-month validity period. The U.S. Embassy in Abuja announced the changes as part of its reciprocity policy, which adjusts visa terms based on how foreign governments treat American citizens. While existing visas issued before the implementation date will remain valid, the new rules will apply to all future applications for business, tourism and student visas. Embassy officials stressed the changes reflect standard global practices and are designed to maintain immigration system integrity, pointing to requirements including secure travel documents, effective overstay prevention measures and proper information sharing between nations. The statement emphasized America’s continued commitment to its relationship with Nigeria while working with local authorities to meet international travel security standards. Nigerian applicants are advised to carefully review the updated requirements and ensure all documentation meets the new criteria as both countries continue discussions on mobility and security cooperation. The policy shift follows recent U.S. moves to tighten visa screening processes worldwide, including enhanced social media checks for student visa seekers implemented earlier this year.
