Iran threatens to close Strait of Hormuz if US attacks power plants

Iran says it would entirely seal the Strait of Hormuz if US President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to strike Tehran’s power plants.

On Saturday, Trump threatened to “hit and obliterate” Iranian power stations, “starting with the biggest one first,” if the crucial canal was not completely open for commerce within 48 hours.

The ultimatum came a day after the president announced that he was considering “winding down” military operations after three weeks of war, despite the fact that hundreds of extra US soldiers had been deployed to the Middle East.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that if the US president followed through on his threats, Iran would fully close down the Strait of Hormuz.

The IRGC warned that targeting Iranian energy infrastructure would result in “complete destruction” of enterprises having US shares.

According to the “power plants of regional countries hosting US bases will be legitimate targets for us” , the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian declared the canal “open to all except those who violate our soil” on Sunday.

Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araghchi has also stated that Tehran has put restrictions solely on warships from nations that have attacked Iran and will assist others who have kept out of the crisis.

So far, Indian-flagged vessels have been reported to navigate a safe trip across the strait.
