The federal government has commenced the implementation of key welfare provisions contained in its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
On January 14, the federal government struck a renegotiated agreement with ASUU to address the repeated strikes at Nigeria’s public institutions.
The new agreement involves extensive renegotiation between the government committee and ASUU leadership, which was completed in 2025.
Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, said in a statement on Monday that the federal government has fulfilled its responsibility under the agreement by granting a 40% rise in the consolidated academic allowance (CAA) for ASUU members, effective January 1, 2026.
Alausa stated that some federal institutions have already begun reflecting the agreed increase in wage payments and that procedures are being taken to achieve consistent implementation across all federal colleges.
He stated that all vice-chancellors have been formally advised to properly transfer the allowance in their institutions and incorporate it into their payroll systems, ensuring that all qualified academic staff benefit.
The minister also urged vice-chancellors to rigorously adhere to the implementation framework for the consolidated tools allowance (CATA), asking them to make efficient use of available resources to ensure timely payment.
Alausa stated that the CATA payment has already been documented and circulated by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC) and that its inclusion in the 2026 budget was a genuine statutory process.
He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to upholding agreements reached with education stakeholders, while also promising continuing engagement, openness, industrial harmony, and ongoing efforts to improve the country’s educational quality.
