Motorists on the Lokoja-Abuja route have been left trapped owing to traffic, just days before Christmas.

The snarled gridlock on the highway has continued for three days.

Drivers interviewed by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) stated that they have been on the road since early Saturday, with no end in sight.

“It is now 8 p.m., and I have been here since 7 a.m. with my family, heading to Enugu,” one motorist said.

The traffic jam has been especially severe around Koton Karfe.

According to reports, the roadblock was caused by two trucks that had fallen on the road.

According to estimates, the truck and car pile-up might stretch for three to five kilometres.

Some commuters were forced to take highly dusty off-road detours to avoid the obstruction.

Security forces, including members of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), have been deployed in the region to alleviate traffic congestion.

The Kogi state administration has begun measures to reduce traffic congestion on the route ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

A delegation from the state government, led by Jerry Omodara, state security adviser, visited vital parts of the highway and highlighted problems that needed immediate maintenance to enable smooth vehicle traffic during peak travel times.

Omodara stated that the initiative was approved by the state executive council to avoid repeating holiday season bottlenecks.

According to the state administration, the restrictions were put in place to safeguard commuters’ safety and convenience over the holiday season.
