The diplomatic clearance ends months of uncertainty over his posting, with Omokri also accredited to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
The Mexican government has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country, ending months of uncertainty over his diplomatic posting.
Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, 20 October, in a post on X, saying José Manuel Briseño Flores, chargé d’affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, delivered the diplomatic approval, known as agrément, to Babagana Wakil, director of protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The approval covers Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me,” Omokri wrote.
The development clears a major outstanding requirement for his diplomatic posting, which had remained pending despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval of his assignment earlier in the year.
Mexico approves Omokri after months of delay
On 6 March 2026, Tinubu approved the postings of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to Nigeria’s diplomatic missions abroad and the United Nations.
The list comprised 31 career diplomats and 34 non-career ambassadors. Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and a political commentator, was assigned to Mexico City.
However, the assignment remained pending while Nigeria awaited formal diplomatic acceptance from the Mexican government.
In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.
The ministry said it was engaging the relevant authorities and expressed confidence that the approvals would be conveyed in due course.
The Mexican government’s agrément now resolves the outstanding approval for Omokri’s posting to Mexico.

What Mexico’s agrément means for Omokri
Agrément is the formal consent a host country gives before a diplomat nominated by another country can be appointed to serve as its ambassador.
Under established diplomatic practice, a sending country seeks the host country’s approval before formally appointing an ambassador. The process allows the receiving country to accept or decline the proposed representative.
Omokri’s clearance covers not only Mexico but also concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. This means he is designated to represent Nigeria in those countries in addition to his principal assignment in Mexico.
The approval follows a wider process to fill Nigeria’s diplomatic positions after the President recalled the previous ambassadors in September 2023. Tinubu’s March 2026 postings came after the Senate confirmed the nominees in December 2025.
Although the agrément removes a key diplomatic hurdle, it does not by itself establish that Omokri has arrived at his post or formally assumed duties in Mexico. Further details on his deployment have not been established in the reports reviewed.
