US issues urgent security alert as Middle East tensions escalate

US issues a security alert as Saudi-Houthi fighting intensifies, warning of possible airspace closures, travel disruptions and wider regional escalation.

The United States has urged its citizens in the Middle East to stay vigilant as tensions across the region intensify, warning that the fallout could include flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions.

The warning was issued in a security alert on Saturday, in which the US Department of State described the situation as “complex” and cautioned that it could deteriorate without warning. The department pointed to renewed hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, including strikes on Saudi territory and civilian airports.

“This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly,” the advisory said.

Advisory Follows Reported Missile Attack On Riyadh

The alert was issued after Saudi Arabia reported a missile attack aimed at its capital, Riyadh. The Houthis have intensified their attacks on Saudi Arabia as fighting resumes in Yemen, where the group is battling forces backed by Riyadh, and Saudi Arabia has answered with airstrikes on Houthi-held areas. The confrontation marks a fresh escalation in a conflict that had largely quieted since a 2022 truce.

The Houthis, an armed Islamic movement in Yemen, and Saudi-backed forces have returned to open conflict following years of comparative quiet. The Iran-aligned group has widened its operations across Yemen and along the Red Sea coast, while Saudi Arabia has stepped up support for Yemen’s internationally recognised government. The Houthis say their strikes on Saudi targets are retaliation for the kingdom’s military campaign.

Recent attacks have involved missile and drone strikes on Saudi locations, with Riyadh intercepting some projectiles and launching retaliatory strikes on Houthi positions. The escalation carries added weight given the Houthis’ proximity to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping route linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

The renewed violence also unfolds against a wider backdrop of tension involving Iran, Israel and the United States, raising concern that the Yemen conflict could pull in other regional players. Saudi authorities recently sounded an air raid alert in Riyadh over a reported incoming attack, the first such alert in the capital since fighting resumed in Yemen.

US Warns Its Interests Abroad Could Also Be Targeted

US

The State Department said broader regional tensions could put American diplomatic facilities, businesses and other interests at risk, and warned that Iran and Tehran-aligned groups could target US interests even beyond the Middle East.

Americans were advised to steer clear of demonstrations and large gatherings, stay alert near locations associated with the US, and follow instructions from local authorities. The department also urged travellers to track airline and airport operations and to enrol in its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for ongoing security updates.
