Police arrest, extradite Chinese national over alleged $245m fraud scheme

The Nigeria Police Force says it has arrested and extradited a Chinese national, Xu Qing, to China over his alleged involvement in a fraud scheme valued at more than $245 million.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, police spokesperson Anthony Placid said the operation was carried out by the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja following a request from Chinese authorities, who declared the suspect wanted in Beijing over allegations linked to illegal public deposit schemes.

According to the police, investigations showed that the suspect arrived in Nigeria on November 5, 2024, allegedly to evade arrest, after which Chinese authorities issued a warrant against him.

Placid said INTERPOL operatives tracked and arrested the suspect at a factory in Olowotedo, Siun Village, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State on April 24, 2026.

He added that the suspect was extradited to China on April 28 through bilateral police cooperation arrangements to face prosecution.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, reiterated the force’s commitment to international collaboration against transnational crime and urged businesses to conduct proper background checks before engaging foreign nationals.
