United Bank for Africa has denied reports circulating on social media alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony O. Elumelu, has divorced his wife, describing the claims as false and defamatory.
In a statement issued by the bank, UBA said the publication was fabricated and intended to mislead the public and damage the reputation of its chairman.
The bank added that the matter has been referred to law enforcement authorities, who have commenced action. It confirmed that three individuals linked to the creation and dissemination of the claims have been arrested.
UBA identified the individuals as Kingsley Akunemeihe, Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue, noting that investigations are ongoing and may lead to further arrests and prosecutions.
The bank also issued a cease-and-desist notice to individuals and platforms involved in sharing the content, directing them to remove the publication and preserve all related records pending legal action.
UBA said it would pursue both civil and criminal measures to hold those responsible accountable and protect the reputation and privacy of its chairman.
