Team Nigeria finished seventh at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with 24 medals, emerging as Africa’s highest-ranked nation after winning 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals.
Nigeria amassed 24 medals, 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze, across athletics, para-powerlifting, weightlifting and judo, capping off one of its strongest Commonwealth Games performances in recent history.
Australia topped the overall standings with 171 medals, including 70 gold, while England placed second with 110 medals. Canada, India, Scotland and New Zealand completed the top six ahead of Nigeria.
Athletics Delivers Historic Gold Rush
Athletics accounted for the largest share of Nigeria’s medals, highlighted by a series of historic performances.
Samuel Ogazi, Ezekiel Nathaniel and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi each claimed Nigeria’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medals in the men’s 400 metres, 400m hurdles and shot put, respectively.
Para-athlete Goodness Nwachukwu successfully defended her women’s discus throw F42–44/F61–64 title to secure another gold medal for Team Nigeria.
The athletics team also contributed several podium finishes, with Udodi Onwuzurike, Ruth Usoro and Jessica Oji winning silver in the men’s 200m, women’s long jump and women’s shot put, respectively.
Bronze Medals Cap Strong Athletics Campaign
Nigeria added several bronze medals on the track and in the field.
World record holder Tobi Amusan claimed bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles, while Kayinsola Ajayi finished third in the men’s 100m.
Temitope Adeshina made history by winning Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s high jump in more than seven decades, securing bronze.
Ella Onojuvwevwo also earned bronze in the women’s 400m before helping Nigeria finish third in the mixed 4x400m relay.
The men’s 4x100m relay team initially celebrated a silver medal after Canada’s disqualification, but following a subsequent review, the result was revised and Nigeria’s medal was downgraded to bronze.
Weightlifting, Para-Powerlifting and Judo Boost Medal Tally
Nigeria’s success extended beyond athletics, with athletes in weightlifting, para-powerlifting and judo making significant contributions to the country’s final medal count.
The combined performances across the four sports ensured Nigeria comfortably finished as Africa’s highest-ranked country at the Games.
Glasgow 2026 Closes on a Historic Note
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games was a scaled-back edition compared with previous tournaments, featuring approximately 3,000 athletes competing for 215 gold medals. By comparison, the Birmingham 2022 Games featured more than 5,000 athletes across 280 medal events.
Glasgow stepped in as host after Victoria, Australia, withdrew from staging the Games in July 2023 because of rising costs.
For Nigeria, however, the Games will be remembered as a landmark outing that produced historic firsts, standout individual performances and a top-10 finish on the medal table, reinforcing the country’s status as one of the Commonwealth’s leading sporting nations.
