Team Nigeria strengthened its position at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Saturday after winning two silver medals and one bronze, taking the country’s total medal haul to 22 ahead of the final day of competition.
The latest medals came from athletics and judo, with the men’s 4x100m relay team and long jumper Ruth Usoro claiming silver, while judoka Enku Ekuta secured bronze in the women’s -63kg event.
The results leave Nigeria with 10 gold, seven silver and five bronze medals, maintaining the country’s strong showing at the Games.
Relay Team Claims Silver After Canada Disqualification
Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay quartet of Favour Ashe, Kayinsola Ajayi, Nicholas Fakorede and Udodi Onwuzurike produced one of the performances of the evening, clocking a season’s best 38.12 seconds to finish second.
Australia claimed the gold medal in 38.07 seconds, edging Nigeria by just five hundredths of a second.
Although Canada initially crossed the line ahead of Nigeria, the team was later disqualified, elevating the Nigerian quartet to the silver-medal position.
The result adds another athletics medal to Nigeria’s growing collection in Glasgow and continues the team’s impressive sprint campaign.
Ruth Usoro Returns to the Commonwealth Podium
In the women’s long jump, Ruth Usoro delivered another medal-winning performance for Team Nigeria.
Her opening jump of 6.87 metres, recorded with a +2.7m/s tailwind, proved enough to secure the silver medal after remaining unbeaten by the rest of the field.
England’s Jazmin Sawyers won gold with a leap of 6.93 metres.
The medal marks a significant turnaround for Usoro, who finished sixth at the previous Commonwealth Games. Four years later, she returned to claim her first Commonwealth medal and further boost Nigeria’s athletics success.
Enku Ekuta Battles Back for Judo Bronze
Nigeria also celebrated success on the judo mat as Enku Ekuta claimed bronze in the women’s -63kg category.
After suffering defeat in the quarter-finals, Ekuta fought her way through the repechage before producing a dominant display against Zambia’s Rita Kabinda in the bronze-medal contest.
She sealed victory by ippon in under three minutes, securing Nigeria’s fifth bronze medal of the Games.
Nigeria narrowly missed another podium finish in the women’s 4x100m relay, with the quartet of Miracle Ezechukwu, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Olayinka Olajide and Prestina Ochonogor placing sixth in 43.74 seconds.
Jamaica claimed the gold medal in 42.65 seconds, while Canada finished second in 42.76 seconds.
All Eyes on the Final Day
Saturday’s performances lifted Team Nigeria’s overall tally to 22 medals, 10 gold, seven silver and five bronze, heading into the final day of competition in Glasgow.
With several medal events still to be decided, Nigeria will look to finish the Games on a strong note and further improve its position on the Commonwealth Games medal table.
