Party Seeks To Bolster Opposition With Former Candidate’s Return

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed today that it is actively working to bring former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, back into its fold. The party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, disclosed during a press briefing in Abuja that the PDP leadership has initiated discussions with Obi to strengthen the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. Abdullahi emphasized the party’s commitment to uniting progressive forces to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges, citing Obi’s popularity and governance record as key assets.
The PDP’s National Working Committee met with state chairmen to strategize on reintegrating high-profile defectors, with Obi as a top priority. The party directed its South-East leadership to engage Obi’s supporters in Anambra and Enugu, aiming to rebuild its base in the region. Abdullahi stated that the PDP is prepared to offer Obi a significant role, potentially the presidential ticket, to counter the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The move follows recent defections, including that of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, prompting the PDP to consolidate its ranks. Governors from the South-South, led by Godwin Obaseki, pledged to support the initiative, with plans to hold town hall meetings to gauge public support. The PDP’s efforts reflect the urgency to present a united front, with the party planning a national reconciliation conference in September. The leadership also directed state chapters to intensify grassroots mobilization to counter APC’s dominance, particularly in urban centers like Lagos and Kano.
