The 38-year-old forward scored both goals as the defending champions secured qualification for the Round of 32, taking his World Cup tally to 18 goals and surpassing the previous record held by German striker Miroslav Klose.

Messi entered the tournament level with Klose on 16 goals after netting a hattrick against Algeria in Argentina’s opening game. His brace against Austria moved him clear at the top of the all-time scoring charts.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a composed finish after earlier missing a penalty, which would have seen him break the record sooner. He later added a second goal deep into stoppage time to seal Argentina’s second consecutive win of the tournament.

The result ensured Argentina’s progression to the knockout phase with six points from two matches and reinforced Messi’s status as one of the most decorated players in football history.

Messi’s latest milestone also saw him surpass Brazilian legend Marta’s tally of 17 goals across the FIFA Women’s World Cup, making him the outright leading scorer across both the men’s and women’s tournaments.

The only active player within touching distance of the record is Kylian Mbappé, who currently has 14 World Cup goals.

Other notable names on the record list are retired or late. Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazário with 15 goals at the World Cup; Germany’s Gerd Müller with 14 goals; the late great Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pelé); and France’s Just Fontaine with 13.

Messi is also appearing in his sixth FIFA World Cup, equalling the tournament record for appearances shared by Cristiano Ronaldo and Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

The Inter Miami star continues to add to a remarkable international career that includes leading Argentina to World Cup glory in 2022.
