FG plans voluntary evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa over xenophobic attacks

The Federal Government has announced plans to begin the voluntary evacuation of Nigerians living in South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

In a statement on Sunday, minister of foreign affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said President Bola Tinubu has directed that evacuation flights be arranged for citizens willing to return home.

She said arrangements are underway to register affected individuals, noting that about 130 Nigerians have already indicated interest through the country’s diplomatic mission in South Africa. The figure is expected to increase as Nigerian community groups continue mobilisation efforts.

The minister described the attacks as recurring and warned that anti-foreigner groups often exploit such tensions for political purposes, stressing that Nigerian lives and businesses must not remain exposed to risk.

“Nigerian lives and businesses in South Africa must not continue to be put at risk,” she said.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu added that Nigeria is engaging South African authorities on the issue, referencing a recently signed memorandum of understanding between both countries on early warning systems to protect citizens during periods of tension.

She also urged leaders of Nigerian associations in South Africa to compile lists of those willing to return but unable to fund their travel, as authorities work to organise a special evacuation flight.

According to the minister, intending returnees are required to submit personal details, including identification and proof of circumstances, while registration for the exercise remains free.

The development follows reports of recurring attacks against foreign nationals, including Nigerians, in South Africa, prompting Nigeria to summon the country’s acting high commissioner over the incidents.

WHAT THIS MEANS

The planned evacuation reflects rising diplomatic concern over the safety of Nigerians abroad and signals a more proactive response to recurring xenophobic violence. It may also strain Nigeria–South Africa relations if attacks persist, while highlighting the need for stronger bilateral mechanisms to protect foreign nationals.
