President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to promote peace, unity and stability as Christians and Muslims begin Lent and Ramadan on the same day, describing the rare alignment as a reminder of shared faith and common purpose.

In a message released on February 18, 2026, the president addressed both Christian and Muslim faithful, noting the significance of the two major religious observances coinciding.

“This year, Lent and Ramadan begin on the same day. This is not a common occurrence, and it reminds us that as a people of faith, we share a lot in common and are one people under God,” Tinubu said.

Lent, observed by Christians worldwide, is a 40-day period of fasting, prayer and penitence leading up to Easter. It commemorates the biblical account of Jesus Christ’s fasting in the wilderness before his crucifixion. Ramadan, observed by Muslims as one of the five pillars of Islam, is a month-long period of fasting from dawn to dusk, marked by prayer, reflection and charity.

In his message, Tinubu outlined the spiritual significance of both periods. “For Christians, the Lenten season is a time for fasting, abstinence, and penitence, following Jesus Christ’s example in the wilderness before His crucifixion, which brought salvation to mankind,” he said.

He added that “For Muslims, Ramadan is a hallowed season that reflects total submission to God Almighty and His command of sacrifice, devotion, service, and communal love and giving. It marks one of the five pillars of Islam. Beyond the obligatory fasting, Ramadan calls for deep spiritual reflection in obedience to Islam’s injunctions.”

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is home to large Christian and Muslim populations, and religious observances often carry national significance. The simultaneous commencement of Lent and Ramadan is relatively rare due to differences in the Christian liturgical calendar and the Islamic lunar calendar, which shifts annually.

Tinubu called on Nigerians to reflect the values of their faiths in national life. “As a nation and as a people, I urge us, as we embark on these important observances, to ensure good neighbourliness, promote peace, unity, and stability, and pray for the progress and security of our nation,” he said.

He further appealed for personal responsibility and ethical conduct, stating, “Let us live by the good precepts of our faiths and be honourable in our duty to God and fellow humans.”

The president concluded by expressing hope for spiritual renewal during the period: “I pray that the lessons, blessings, and joys of these sacred seasons abide with us always.”
