Abia Governor Alex Otti Rules Out Joining Opposition Coalition, Reaffirms Loyalty to Labour Party

…Amid 2027 Opposition Alliance Moves, Otti Says He’s Focused on Delivering Governance in Abia

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has dismissed speculation about joining a newly formed opposition coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections, reaffirming his commitment to the Labour Party (LP).

The coalition, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform, appointed former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman and ex-Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as secretary. Bolaji Abdullahi, a former sports minister, will serve as spokesperson.

However, speaking during an interactive session with the Abia State Global Economic Council in Umuahia, Otti clarified that he remains a dedicated LP member and has no intention of defecting.

“You have a right to dream, I also have the right to state that I’m still a member of the Labour Party and I’m not looking for where to decamp to,” Otti said.

“A lot of people have been asking: are you a member of the coalition? And my response is, ‘have you seen my name? Have you seen me attending any coalition meeting?’”

The governor emphasized that his administration is preoccupied with fulfilling its mandate to Abia residents rather than engaging in opposition alliances.

“We are busy doing the work that Abia people have given us. We are not attending any coalition meeting. I have not attended one. Nobody has invited me,” he stated.

While acknowledging past internal disputes within the LP, Otti expressed confidence in resolving lingering issues, citing the clarity of the Supreme Court’s judgment on the party’s leadership.

“Yes, we had issues. A lot of people believe that a few issues that remain would be solved very soon because the Supreme Court judgment was very clear,” he added.
