The Joint Revenue Board (JRB) has announced that the Nigerian tax identity (ID) system would be live countrywide on January 1, 2026, as part of efforts to modernise taxation.
The board made the announcement in a message posted on its official X account on Monday.
According to the JRB, tax identification is a unique, system-generated number provided to all taxable people in Nigeria only for tax administration reasons.
It said that the tax ID will be connected to an individual’s national identity number and a business or organization’s registration number with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
The board said that the new tax ID would replace previously issued tax identification numbers as of the effective date.
It further said that the implementation of the tax ID will not result in bank account deductions or closures owing to non-compliance.
According to the JRB, the portal is intended to give taxpayers with uniform identity, make it easier to obtain tax-related services, and assure countrywide accessibility.
The board recommended people to get their tax ID using the appropriate site or visit their local tax office for help.
