NNPC reports explosion on Escravos-Lagos pipeline

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited reports an explosion on its Escravos-Lagos pipeline.

Andy Odeh, NNPC spokesperson, stated on Friday that the incident occurred on December 10 near the Tebijor, Okpele, and Ikpopo towns in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Delta State.

Odeh stated that first observations showed a pressure decrease consistent with a loss of containment on a NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) pipeline.

“The cause of the explosion is still unknown but would be confirmed after a detailed investigation has been concluded,” the NNPC said.

“Our priority at this time is the safety of nearby communities and the protection of the environment.

“Emergency response procedures have been activated, and we are working closely with relevant authorities and community leaders to ensure a coordinated approach to mitigate impact.”

The NNPC stated that it is committed to the greatest safety and environmental standards.

The latest explosion adds to a string of events impacting communities and the environment in the Niger Delta area.

In October, an oil spill occurred on a pipeline owned by Nembe Exploration and Production Company Limited (previously Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company Limited).

Another leak happened in May at Rivers state’s Ikata village, Ahoada East Local Government Area.
