Are you a frequent flyer or occasional traveller? Flying in Nigeria doesn’t have to be stressful. Most airport hassles can be avoided with a little preparation and good manners. Here are five essential etiquette tips to make your journey smoother for you and everyone around you:
Security Screening
If you’re travelling with liquids, ensure they’re in containers of 100ml or less. Anything more than this should be checked in.
Obey Instructions
When asked to queue, or remove your laptop, or switch your phone off, or disembark row by row, kindly obey. It costs you nothing and makes life easier for all.
Respect
Try to respect others, including fellow passengers, airport staff (such as check-in personnel, baggage handlers, and security personnel), and airline staff (pilots, cabin crew, and customer service personnel). Airports are busy, but that doesn’t mean personal space disappears. Avoid crowding others at check-in counters, security, or baggage claim. And when lining up to board, wait your turn rather than pushing ahead—it makes the process smoother for everyone.
Baggage
Onboard, use only the space you need. You are allowed to keep smaller items under the seat in front of you, leaving the overhead spaces for larger items.
Keep your luggage tags for the screening process before you depart the airport. The search might seem inconvenient, but it helps to keep everyone’s luggage safe.
Grievances
Use official channels to express your grievances, instead of taking laws into your hands. You’d be surprised at how productive formal complaints can be, especially through email.
