Lagos APC Expels 25 Members Over Election Misconduct

Party Cracks Down On Anti-Party Activities In Local Polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State expelled 25 members on July 18, 2025, for engaging in anti-party activities during the July 12 local government elections, as reported by Leadership. APC state chairman Cornelius Ojelabi announced the expulsions, citing evidence that the members campaigned for opposition candidates in areas like Ikeja, Badagry, and Agege.

The group included three former council chairmen accused of undermining the APC’s victories, which secured 18 of 20 local government areas. Ojelabi stated that the expulsions aim to enforce discipline and maintain party unity, warning other members against similar actions. The Lagos APC established a disciplinary committee to investigate additional cases, with further sanctions possible by August.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos offered automatic membership to the expelled members, aiming to strengthen its base in the state. The expulsions have intensified internal tensions within the APC, particularly in Lagos, a critical economic hub contributing 35% of Nigeria’s GDP. The party leadership directed state executives to monitor grassroots activities to prevent further defections.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, speaking at a party meeting, called for loyalty and urged members to focus on delivering governance. The controversy has sparked debates about party loyalty, with the APC emphasizing its dominance in Lagos politics. The disciplinary committee will submit a report to the national secretariat, which could influence the party’s strategy for the 2027 elections. The expulsions reflect the APC’s efforts to maintain control in Nigeria’s most populous state, where political defections could impact national electoral dynamics.
