… Tinubu administration reaffirms commitment to reciprocity amid US visa restrictions dispute.
Nigeria’s presidency has denied claims that President Bola Tinubu stopped issuing 5-year multiple-entry visas to US citizens, calling online reports “misinformation.”
In a statement, Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga clarified that Nigeria continues to grant Americans 5-year visas under existing bilateral agreements. The recent 90-day single-entry e-Visa replaces the obsolete “visa-on-arrival” system for tourists and business visitors seeking faster processing.
The e-Visa; approved within 48 hours online – aligns with Tinubu’s push to boost tourism, trade, and ease of doing business. Dozens of countries use similar systems.
However, Nigeria highlighted a lack of reciprocity: While US citizens get 5-year Nigerian visas, America hasn’t matched Nigeria’s new e-Visa convenience for Nigerians. Officials called the US claim of reciprocal policy “inaccurate” and pledged continued dialogue to resolve “unfair restrictions.”
“The Tinubu administration remains committed to mutual respect with the US,” the statement affirmed, noting diplomatic talks are ongoing to address disparities.
