Rivers Assembly initiates impeachment process against governor Fubara

Rivers State House of Assembly has begun moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The assembly, led by Hon. Martins Amaewhule, reversed its earlier decision to resume plenary on January 26th and will instead resume on Thursday.

The resumed session was announced in an internal document distributed to all House members and signed by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi.

The memo dated January 5th stated: “By the leave of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule DSSRS, in accordance with Order 4, Rule 3 of the Standing Orders of the Rivers House of Assembly (1999), you are hereby advised that the House will reconvene for Plenary on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.

“Consequently, you are expected to treat this information with utmost importance and attend the sitting accordingly.”

During a plenary session presided over by Amaewhule, Major Jack, the Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, read the notice of complaints of gross misconduct against Fubara.

The assembly accused the governor of converting the state’s funds into dollars and paying people in Abuja to persuade President Bola Tinubu not to invite him (Fubara) to deliver the 2025 budget to the legislature.

Twenty-six assembly members signed the notice, alleging it violated the Nigerian Constitution.

Amaewhule stated that the notification will be served on Fubara within the next seven days.

Linda Stewart, Deputy Majority Leader of the House, also read the notice of charges and gross misconduct against Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu.
