Caracas hit by explosions amid U.S. airstrikes in Venezuela

Several explosions shook Caracas early Saturday, and a CNN team reported that areas of the Venezuelan capital had been cut off from the electricity grid.

The initial blast was registered about 1.50 a.m. local time, according to the network.

“One was so strong, my window was shaking after it,” Osmary Hernandez, a CNN correspondent, said.

Following the blasts, several areas lost electricity, and planes could be heard hovering overhead.

The reason of the explosions was not immediately apparent.

CNN received and authenticated a video showing two plumes of smoke pouring into the night sky among flickering city lights, with an orange glow visible at the base of one plume before a flash and a dull booming sound elsewhere.

According to Venezuelan news sites Efecto Cocuyo and Tal Cual Digital, explosions were also heard in La Guaira state, north of Caracas, along the country’s coast, and in Higuerote, a seaside city in Miranda.

US President Donald Trump has frequently warned that the US is ready to take additional action against suspected drug trafficking networks in Venezuela, with land attacks set to begin shortly.

In October, Trump said that he has ordered the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to operate within Venezuela to combat the illicit flow of migrants and narcotics from the South American country.
