Bernie Moreno, a United States senator, has introduced a bill to end dual citizenship for American citizens.
Currently, US law permits citizens to hold more than one citizenship without having to renounce any of them.
Moreno’s initiative, known as the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, contends that this flexibility may result in “conflicts of interest and divided loyalties.”
“One of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so,” said the Colombian-born senator.
“It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY to the United States of America! Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege—and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing. It’s time to end dual citizenship for good.”
If implemented, the rule might have an impact on prominent US residents such as Melania Trump, the US first lady, who has dual citizenship in the United States and Slovenia. It will also affect many Nigerians who have dual citizenship in both Nigeria and the United States.
According to a July report on US naturalisations by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), 38,890 Nigerians were sworn in as naturalized US citizens between 2021 and 2023. Nigeria placed 13th among countries having the most naturalized citizens and was the only African country in the top 20.
Nigerian law allows citizens by birth to acquire or retain another nationality while maintaining their Nigerian citizenship.
Earlier this year, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order denying automatic citizenship to US-born children of unauthorized immigrants.
The decree was immediately challenged by 18 states and rights groups, citing violations of the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship clause, and has yet to take effect owing to ongoing legal challenges.
