Trump gives Iran 48-hour ultimatum over Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has issued a warning to Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or risk “hell reigning down” on the Arabian nation.

Trump’s comments, contained in a Truth Social post on Saturday, are a resumption of his threats to Iran last month over the closure of the waterway.

“Remember when I gave Iran ten days to MAKE A DEAL or OPEN UP THE HORMUZ STRAIT. Time is running out – 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them. Glory be to GOD!” the US president wrote.

Earlier in March, Tehran announced that the strait, one of the world’s busiest oil shipping routes, will be open to all excluding the United States and its allies.

On March 22, Trump threatened to “hit and obliterate” Iranian power plants, “beginning with the largest one first,” if the strait was not fully reopened within 48 hours.

In response, Iran threatened to totally close the Strait of Hormuz if Trump carried out his threats.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) threatened to attack US-owned enterprises and power plants in neighboring countries if Iranian energy facilities were targeted.

A day after Iran’s statement, Trump announced that the US will postpone the strikes for five days.
The US president’s latest threats came just days after he stated that the Strait of Hormuz would open “naturally” after the fighting ended.

Earlier, Iran claimed it would let tankers carrying “essential goods” to pass through the congested strait.

However, it is unclear which commodities Iran considers “essential” and whether it will maintain its ban on vessels from hostile nations.
