Many killed as gunmen attack Plateau community

Many residents have been killed following an attack on Angwan Rukuba community in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The incident occurred at approximately 8pm on Sunday at a bar in the community.

The victims came under gunfire from unidentified gunmen, suspected to be cult members.

At least 12 people have been confirmed dead, with several others sustaining injuries of varying degrees. The wounded were evacuated to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

In response to the attack, the Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North.

Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the information commissioner, described the attack as a “tragic security incident”.

“‎The Plateau State Government, in conjunction with security agencies, wishes to inform the general public of the imposition of a 48-hour curfew within Jos North Local Government Area with immediate effect, commencing from 12 midnight of 29th March, to 1st April, 2026,” the statement reads.

“‎The government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, strongly condemns this barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“‎Citizens are urged to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate fully with security agencies by providing any useful information that may aid ongoing investigations.”

Military personnel from Sector 1 of Operation Enduring Peace have been deployed to the area to contain the situation.

The troops have reportedly sealed off major entry points into the community, directing residents to stay indoors as a search operation gets underway to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
