Kwankwaso resigns from NNPP, cites ‘strategic realignment’

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), ending his role as a leading figure in the party following his 2023 presidential bid.

In a statement announcing his decision, Kwankwaso said his resignation takes “immediate effect,” marking a significant development in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of future electoral cycles.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, described the move as difficult but necessary. “I wish to formally announce my resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect,” he said.

Reflecting on his time in the party, he expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve in key roles, including as national leader and presidential flagbearer. “I seize this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the Party’s National Leader and its Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Elections. As a committed and bonafide member of the party, this was not an easy decision to make,” he stated.

He attributed his departure to broader political considerations, pointing to shifts within the national political environment. According to him, “considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation.”

Kwankwaso’s exit is likely to have implications for the NNPP, particularly in northern Nigeria, where he commands significant political influence through the Kwankwasiyya Movement. The movement played a central role in mobilising support for the party during the 2023 elections, contributing to its performance in Kano and other parts of the country.

While he did not disclose his next political affiliation, his reference to a “strategic realignment” suggests a possible shift ahead of future political contests. Party defections and alliances remain a common feature of Nigeria’s political system, often reshaping party strength and electoral dynamics.

Kwankwaso also used the statement to thank the party’s leadership and members for their support during his time in the NNPP. He said, “I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time.”

He further acknowledged other organs of the party, including the Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee and grassroots members, as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

Despite his departure, Kwankwaso indicated a willingness to maintain political cooperation, stating, “We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation.”

His resignation adds to ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political space as parties and key figures position themselves for future elections.
