FCT Council Poll: EFCC arrests 20 for vote buying, recovers N17m

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said its agents arrested 20 suspects for various electoral offenses, including alleged vote buying, during Saturday’s local council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement posted on its X account on Sunday, the anti-graft agency said officers retrieved more than N17 million from many of the accused.

According to the statement, the individuals were arrested for different electoral crimes, including vote buying and selling.

“One of the suspects was arrested with a sum of N13,500,000 (Thirteen Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira) in a car parked beside a polling booth in the Kwali Local Government Area,” the statement reads.

“Two of the suspects were arrested in Abaji; nine in Gwagwalada; four in Kuje and the remaining four in Kwali.”

The EFCC stated that the individuals will be charged in court once the investigations are completed.

The FCT council votes recorded low voter turnout and sparked charges of electoral manipulation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), whose candidates lost in various areas of the territory.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) won five of the six chairmanship positions, securing a landslide victory in the elections. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won only the Gwagwalada area council.
