Trump announces 15% tariff increase after supreme court ruling

US President Donald Trump has increased global tariffs on imported goods from 10 to 15 percent.

The decision, which Trump disclosed on Saturday in a Truth Social post, a day after the US Supreme Court rejected his initial sweeping global tariffs.

Trump claimed he was “absolutely ashamed” of some of the judges who voted to overturn his order.

In his Saturday post, he reaffirmed his views, calling the court’s judgment “ridiculous, poorly written, and extraordinarily anti-American”.

“Please let this statement serve to represent that I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been ‘ripping’ the U.S. off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level,” Trump said.

The US president stated that his administration will determine and implement the additional tariffs within the next “short number” of months.

The tariffs were supposed to take effect on February 24, before the Supreme Court affirmed a lower court’s ruling that Trump’s use of the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose the penalties was illegal.

In a 6-3 decision, the court concluded that Trump exceeded his authority by using a provision intended for national emergencies to impose broad import duties without congressional authorization.

However, the court’s decision permitted some tariffs on specific items from specific nations to remain in place, perhaps providing the administration the opportunity to restructure aspects of its trade strategy.
