Mohammed Kasim, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, won the Gwagwalada local council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s returning officer, Philip Akpen, revealed the results on Sunday morning.
Kasim won with 22,165 votes, defeating Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who received 17,788.
Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) finished third with a score of 1,687.
“I am the returning officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Gwagwalada chairmanship held on Feb. 21, 2026,” Akpen said.
“That Mohammed Kasim of PDP, having certified the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.”
APC wins in AMAC
Meanwhile, in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, the APC candidate, was declared the winner of the chairmanship election with 40,295 votes.
Andrew Abueo, AMAC’s collation officer, stated that Maikalangu, the current AMAC chairman, was re-elected after receiving the most votes.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) finished second with 12,109 votes, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) received 3,398 votes.
According to Abue, the total number of legitimate votes in the chairmanship election was 62,861, with 65,197 votes cast overall.
He stated that AMAC has 837,338 registered voters and 65,676 certified voters.
