UK to phase out physical visa stickers for Nigerians from Feb 25

Nigerian travellers visiting the United Kingdom (UK) will start using digital visas on February 25, 2026, when British officials phase out conventional visa stickers.

The British High Commission (BHC) stated on Monday that the e-visas will replace the conventional stickers formerly granted in Nigerian passports.

“This means travellers will access their visa electronically through their UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account, marking a significant step in modernising the UK’s visa process,” the statement reads.

The BHC did, however, state that visa application conditions remain intact.

Travellers will continue to apply as normal, visit a visa application center to give biometric information, and fulfil all existing eligibility requirements.

The only difference is how the visa is issued: instead of a physical sticker, applicants will receive a secure digital record confirming their immigration status.

The statement stated that Nigerians who presently have a valid vignette sticker do not need to take any action because their physical visa is valid until it expires or has to be replaced.

“Passports will be returned more quickly, and travellers can manage their immigration status online at any time, from any location,” the British high commission said.

“The digital format offers stronger security, as e-visas cannot be lost, stolen, or tampered with.”

According to Gill Lever, the British deputy high commissioner in Abuja, the transition to digital visas would expedite a critical aspect of the visa process, making it more secure and lowering reliance on paper papers.

After their visa application has been granted, applicants may access their e-visas through a UK visas and immigration (UKVI) account.
