The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has suspended Senegal’s head coach, Pape Thiaw, for five games and fined him $100,000 for “unsporting conduct” after ordering his players off the field during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Morocco.
In a decision published on Thursday, CAF also penalised the Senegalese federation $615,000 for the team’s conduct and the behaviour of the country’s fans at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium during the final.
The CAF disciplinary committee also imposed two-game penalties on two Senegalese players, Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr, for “unsporting behaviour towards the referee.”
Morocco also received penalties for their role in the chaotic AFCON final.
The Moroccan FA got a total punishment of $315,000 for infractions ranging from the ball boys’ behaviour during the game to the country’s players and personnel breaching the VAR review area, hindering the referee’s job, and Moroccan supporters using lasers.
Achraf Hakimi and Ismael Saibari received one and two-match penalties, respectively, for tossing Eduard Mendy’s towel into the crowd during the match, which was played in a rain.
However, CAF rejected Morocco’s plea to reverse the match result due to the Senegalese team’s extended walk-off.
The 2025 AFCON plunged into chaos when the referee, after consulting VAR, awarded Morocco a late penalty for a foul on Brahim Diaz.
In response to the ruling, Thiaw ordered his players and staff off the pitch and into the dugout. Tempers rose in the stands as irate Senegalese supporters confronted stewards, resulting in scuffles.
The Senegalese players and coaching staff protested for about 20 minutes before returning to the pitch to restart the contest.
Senegal survived the penalty call, when Brahim Diaz’s Panenka effort was saved, before Pape Gueye’s screamer secured the Teranga Lions’ second AFCON championship.
