21 Kano assembly members defect from NNPP to APC

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has officially lost twenty-one members of the Kano State Assembly to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Days after Kano Governor Abba Yusuf formally resigned from the NNPP, the MPs declared their defection on Monday.

Days after Yusuf met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, he resigned.

The governor listed “deepening internal crises” and “prolonged leadership disputes” as the main causes of his defection in a letter to the chairman of Diso-Chiranchi ward in Gwale LGA of Kano.

Along with Yusuf, the state’s 44 LGA chairmen, eight members of the House of Representatives, and twenty-one members of the Kano State Assembly resigned.

Jibril Ismail Falgore, the speaker for Rogo, and Muhammad Bello Butu Butu, the deputy speaker for Tofa/Rimin Gado, were among those who defected in the house of assembly.

Other members include Muddasir Ibrahim Zawachiki, chief whip for Kumbotso, Garba Shehu Fammar, deputy majority leader for Kibiya, and Lawan Hussain, majority leader for Dala.

Zakariyya Abdullahi Nuhu, the majority whip for Gabasawa, Lawal Tini for Ajingi, and Musa Tahir Haruna for Albasu are also on the list.

Hafiz Gambo of Bunkure, Rabiu Shuaibu of Dawakin Kudu, Ali Lawan Alhassan of Bagwai/Shanono, and Ali Muhammad Tiga of Bebeji also deserted.

Abdulmajid Isah Umar of Gwale, Murtala Muhammad Kadage of Garko, and Tukur Mohammed of Fagge are also part.

Alhassan Zakari of Kura/Garun Malam, Suleiman Mukhtar Ishaq of Madobi, and Engineer Ahmad Ibrahim of Karaye joined the APC.

The list was completed by Abdulhamid Abdul of Minjibir, Muhammad Ibrahim of Rano, Kabiru Sule Dahiru of Tarauni, and Ali Abdullahi Manager of Wudil.

The national leader of the NNPP, Rabiu Kwankwaso, proclaimed January 23 to be “World Betrayal Day” in response to Yusuf’s defection.

Through his Kwankwasiyya movement, Kwankwaso was instrumental in Yusuf’s 2023 election as governor of Kano.
